The Minister of the Environment attends this Thursday, in Figueira da Foz, the presentation of the results of the “Feasibility study of the alluvial transposition of Barras de Aveiro and Figueira da Foz”.

This is a Bypass system that seeks to ensure the transposition of sediments.

The "Feasibility study of the alluvial transposition of the Barras de Aveiro and Figueira da Foz", developed by the consortium Universidade de Aveiro-R5 and Consulting Engineers, with a cost of 232.000 €, aimed to carry out the evaluation of the technical and cost-effectiveness of transposition solutions, including cost-benefit assessment.

This study included a historical analysis of the evolution of bars and adjacent sections, before and after the stabilization interventions and evaluated the various technical solutions to support decision-making on the implementation of a coastal sedimentary transposition system, for situations like Aveiro and Figueira da Foz.

This meeting took place from 10:30 am in the Small Auditorium of the CAE (João César Monteiro Auditorium).

A little earlier, at 10:00 am, the Minister of Environment and Climate Action, João Pedro de Matos Fernandes visited the works of the “Emergency Reinforcement of the Cordão Dunar Section to the south of Esporão nº 5 from Cova Gala and between Esporão n. No. 2 and Esporão No. 3”, which began on the 27th of July, with a deadline of 1 month.

In Figueira da Foz, the reinforcement of the sand structure confined by aligned and overlapping rows of geosynthetic cylinders is being carried out, in order to bridge the disappearance of part of those installed in 2019.

Thus, the stretch of dune cordon will be reinforced to the south of spur no. 5 of Cova Gala beach and between spurs no. 2 and no. 3, with the replacement of the sand there, in order to guarantee the security of people and goods, at Cova Gala beach, in the Municipality of Figueira da Foz.

This intervention is considered relevant for the pursuit of the policies enshrined in the National Strategy for Integrated Coastal Zone Management and for the need to adapt the territory to climate change.

Its objective is to protect the coast and its populations against risks, especially from coastal erosion.

The coast of Aveiro is one of the most worrying areas in the country in terms of coastal erosion.

Climate change and rising sea levels make this area and Figueira da Foz among the areas of bigger concern in the National Roadmap for Adaptation 2100.
